Elizabeth, with her mother Dorothea Sophia of Newburgh, meets cardinals Gozzadini (papal legate) and Acquaviva (Philip V’s ambassador in Rome) in one of the ducal gardens. The Report on the wedding actually states that the two cardinals’ visits were frequent, but did not coincide. In this painting Spolverini represented all the main protagonists of the celebrations (duke Francis is visible on the right side, dressed in conventional clothes).
