Wampanoag chief Massosoit Metacomet—King Philip was his adopted English name—was initially friendly with the Massachusetts colonial settlers. By 1675, however, the English presence became oppressive to the indigenous tribes, who under Metacomet’s leadership attempted to drive off the settlers in what became known as King Philip’s War, one of the bloodiest conflicts in American history. In 1676 Metacomet was killed by a group of rangers. Created nearly a century after his death, this image of Metacomet is notable both for the engraver—famed silversmith and patriot watchman Paul Revere—and as the first portrait of a Native American printed and circulated in America.
