ルノワールはフランス中央部リモージュに生まれた。(1874年) などの力作を出品した。(1876年) などの力作を出品した。(1882年) 本作に見られる海原や草むらの平行な斜めの筆づかいはセザンヌの描法を反映したものと思われる。オリーブ畑に降り注ぐ陽光は、木の葉や草むらに心地よく吸い込まれ、あふれた光が大気中に飛び交っている。季節は冬であるが、春のような気配がある。ルノワール自身、画商デュラン=リュエルに「風のない穏やかな日差しの春。こういうことはマルセイユではめったにないことです」と感動を書き送っている。1937年ニューヨーク・メトロポリタン美術館で開催された展覧会出品作。.
