徐碧红生于江苏省宜兴市. 1916年入上海奥罗拉大学接受高等教育,主修法语,后出任哈通花园艺术总监和明治大学艺术教授. 1917年赴日本短期学习艺术. 1919年去法国入法国巴黎国立美术学院(École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris). 1927年,他回国并创办了南洋艺术学院,他还曾出任南京江苏大学艺术教育系教授. 1928年出任北京大学艺术学院院长,后开始任教于国立中央大学. 1943年,他成立"中国艺术学院",1946年出任国立北平艺术学院院长. 1949年出任中国画家协会会长,1950年出任中国中央美术学院院长.
