Two door leaves, each made up of eight compartments, display six stylized female figures surrounded by plants and animals, inspired by contemporary paintings. This work by the painter and printmaker César Klein (1876–1954) belongs to the Art Déco style, characterized by luxurious materials, strict formality, and expressive colouration, which gained international popularity between the First and Second World Wars. These door leaves were made in 1919 for the Berlin apartment of the art dealer Wolfgang Gurlitt (1888–1965) where Klein transformed a salon into an atmospherically enchanted hall of mirrors, for which the two glass doors formed a focal point. Ingenious use of electrical light heightened the effect of the coloured glass, reflected by the mirrors on the walls.
