Assumption of the Virgin (1577) is a oil on canvas painting by the Spanish Renaissance painter, sculptor and architect El Greco. Painted for the central panel of the High Altarpiece of the church of Santo Domingo el Antiguo, Toledo, the commission which brought him to Spain. This, the first work executed in Spain, is the only painting by El Greco bearing the date of its execution. It is the first large-scale painting by his hand. The painting (401 x 229 cm) is in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago.
