He worked in the Atlantic trade as Bomba, a kind of interpreter for slave traders. In 1829, he was eventually sold to a buyer in Rio de Janeiro after being charged of theft, fraud and murder in the sheds on the coast of Cabinda, Angola. Shortly after disembarking in Rio de Janeiro, he fled and sought asylum at the Navy Arsenal on Cobras Island. Oral memories of the N´Goio people suggest that Mahitica’s arrival in Brazil was also linked to the embassies of the kingdom of Cabinda and to an attempt to rescue his enslaved relatives sold in the country.
