Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Ronald Moody (1900-1984) moved to Britain in 1923 to study dentistry. He taught himself to carve from wood in the mid-1930s, describing wood as ‘a difficult material, demanding a form’. One of the most distinctive features of Moody’s art is the way he used the grain of the wood. In this piece, he has used the inner rings of the tree to create a kind of
