This work is a model for the largest bas-relief wall sculpture in known modern history: the 110-foot Olivetti Showroom Wall Relief (1954) created for the headquarters of Mutual Life Insurance Company. Nivola used his unique sand-casting technique to create it and, it has since been dubbed a “sandscape,” though it is made of reinforced concrete. He learned the trade of a stonecutter from his father, a master mason. Today, the Olivetti Showroom Wall Relief is on display at the Harvard University Science Center.
