The Seven Sacraments refers to two series of paintings of the seven sacraments by the French painter Nicholas Poussin. This painting (1647-48) is one of the second set of Sacraments, painted for Poussin's faithful friend, Fréart de Chantelou. Here everything is dense and taut, only Marriage with its garlands and luminous windows, displays any lightheartedness. The painting (117 x 178 cm) is in the National Gallery of Scotland, Edinburgh.
