The paperwork contained in this purse claims that it was made by Queen Adelaide who died in 1848, although this attribution is not yet proven. She was the much younger wife of the British monarch King William IV whom he married in the hope of producing a legitimate child and heir. Needlework was considered a proper pastime for high-ranking women and many items still exist in museums, including numerous items by Mary Queen of Scots.
