Broderie anglaise appeared as a popular form of decoration during the early nineteenth century and remained popular into the early twentieth century. It is created through a combination of white work embroidery and cutwork and became a particularly British style, with production in England, Scotland and northern Ireland. This bag has echoes of the fashionable styles of the early nineteenth century but made at a larger scale.
