To the extent to which it had been preserved, Augsburg was not as picturesque as Paris, people here are just too tidy. The ruins of the city, however, were much more interesting pictorially than the areas that had been spared. While painting ruins I learnt to appreciate the formal charms of things random and chaotic, and I understood that I didn’t have to visit the ruins for the purpose, but could also freely invent such shapes. That’s how the first surreal experiments came about.(From Wolfgang Lettl’s memories)
