In diesem Schlachtbild, das im Salon von 1879 gezeigt wurde, stellt Détaille einen Vorfall dar, den er am 2. Dezember 1870 während des französisch-preußischen Krieges beobachtet hatte. General Faron ist links und spricht mit einem alten Gärtner. Der Künstler malte 1879 eine Nachbildung des Bildes (private Sammlung) und kehrte zum Thema für ein riesiges Panorama der Schlacht zurück (jetzt zerstört), die er 1882 mit de Neuville hingerichtete.
