Präsident Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865), 16. Präsident der Vereinigten Staaten bis zu seiner Ermordung am 14. April 1865, von John Wilkes Booth, unterzeichnete die Emancipation Proclamation am 1. Januar 1863. Die Verkündigung erklärte, dass alle Sklaven in rebellischen Staaten frei seien. Dies war ein großer Schlag für die Konföderation und verwandelte den amerikanischen Bürgerkrieg in einen Konflikt, um die Institution der Sklaverei zu beenden.
