Michallon stellte 1812 erstmals im Pariser Salon im Alter von sechzehn Jahren aus und erhielt 1817 den Eröffnungspreis von Rom in der Kategorie der historischen Landschaftsmalerei; es ist wahrscheinlich, dass diese Studie in der dazwischen liegenden Zeit stammt, als er als Schüler von Jean Victor Bertin beauftragt wurde, einzelne Bäume zu machen. Ein charakteristisches Merkmal ist der Weg, in dem der Himmel vom Baum Baldachin gefiltert wird, der den rechten Rand dieser anmutigen Buche und seine schlanken Begleiter mit goldenem Licht erklimmt.
