Diese gruselige Darstellung des abgetrennten Kopfes von Johannes dem Täufer war einmal ein sehr populäres Bild, aufgrund des wachsenden Kults des Heiligen im Mittelalter. Das Panel ist eine von mehr als zwanzig Versionen durch die Übertragung des Designs aus einem gemeinsamen Werkstattmuster in den Kreisen von Dieric Bouts und seinem Sohn Aelbert produziert. Das mimetische Potenzial der Ölmalerei wird hier verwendet, um die Illusion eines echten Kopfes auf einer echten Platte zu schaffen.
