Groll, der in New York City geboren wurde, reiste zunächst nach Arizona, dem Thema dieser Landschaftsmalerei, 1904 mit ethnologist Stewart Culin. Bald wurden seine westlichen Gemälde populär und erhielten ihn eine Medaille auf der Jahresausstellung von 1906 an der Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Grolls Gemälde der westlichen Landschaft beeindruckten die Pueblo-Inder so sehr, dass sie ihn „Chief Bald-Head-Eagle-Eye“ für seine Fähigkeit, die Weite des Landes und der aufragenden Wolken zu erfassen, gegraben haben.
