Eine Moschee dient als Hintergrund für diese Szene des Dorflebens, die viele Figuren im europäischen Stil Militäruniformen bietet. Im Mittelpunkt der lebendigen Mischung der Kulturen zog Pasini seine umfangreichen Reisen im Nahen Osten, die als Quellmaterial für seine Gemälde dienten. Seine erste Gelegenheit, diesen Teil der Welt zu sehen, kam 1855, als er seinen Freund Théodore Chassériau als offizieller Künstler auf einer diplomatischen Mission nach Persia ersetzte.
