Der schicke Satin Abendkleid, den Sammler und Philanthrop Catharine Lorillard Wolfe für Porträts in Paris gespendet hat, beliest ihren Ruf als "ruhig und unannehmlich". Wolfe, der erste weibliche Wohltäter von The Met, soll die reichste unverheiratete Frau in den Vereinigten Staaten sein. Ihr Cousin John Wolfe ermutigte ihre Schirmherrschaft von Cabanel, einem gefeierten Gesellschaftsporträt und Genre Maler, und anderen bedeutenden europäischen akademischen Künstlern. Dieses Portrait, inmitten zahlreicher Kunstwerke, übernahm sie 1887 zusammen mit einer Akquisitionen Stiftung – ein Geschenk, das von der Presse heralisiert wurde, um das Profil öffentlicher Sammlungen moderner Kunst in New York stark zu erhöhen.
