Die erste Version von Cabanel's Birth of Venus (Musée d"Orsay, Paris) kreierte im Salon von 1863 eine Sensation, die aufgrund der Anzahl der verführerischen Nudes im Blick den "Salon der Venusen" gegraben wurde. Das Salon-Bild wurde von Napoleon III für seine persönliche Sammlung gekauft. 1875 beauftragte New Yorker John Wolfe die gegenwärtige, etwas kleinere Replik von Cabanel. Die Komposition verkörpert Ideale der akademischen Kunst: mythologisches Subjekt, anmutige Modellierung, seidige Pinselarbeit und perfektionierte Form. Dieser Stil war bei Sammlern immer beliebt, auch wenn er von Künstlern herausgefordert wurde, die eine persönlichere Interpretation der Wahrheit der Natur, wie Courbet, suchen.
