Das vorliegende Bild zeigt die türkischen Militärpatrouillen, die ihre Runden in Smyrna machen – heute Izmir –, die die Decamps 1828 besuchten. Es ist eine späte Variante seines ersten großen orientalischen Subjekts, ausgestellt auf dem Paris Salon von 1831 (jetzt in der Wallace Collection, London). Decamps gehörte der ersten Generation französischer Maler dazu, Szenen des Alltags im Nahen Osten zu populären. Dieses Gemälde gehörte dem ersten Präsidenten des Metropolitan Museums, John Taylor Johnston, bis 1876, als es von Catharine Lorillard Wolfe, dem ersten weiblichen Wohltäter des Museums gekauft wurde.
