In Übereinstimmung mit dem jüdischen Ritus der Reinigung, vierzig Tage nach der Geburt Maria nahm Jesus zum Tempel; die alte Prophetin Anna (eine Schrift haltend) erkennt ihn als Erlöser Israels. Die Platte stammt von der Basis (Predella) eines komplexen Altarbildes, das für eine Kirche in Pisa gemalt wurde, vielleicht etwa 1405–15. Seine Qualität ist den meisten Gemälden von Alvaro Pirez, einem portugiesischen Maler in der Toskana, überlegen. Offensichtlich kannte der Künstler das Werk der führenden Maler in Florenz, darunter Lorenzo Monaco, dem das Bild einst zugeschrieben wurde.
