Ambrogio da Fossano, bekannt als Bergognone, studierte in der Lombardei in den 1490er Jahren, in einem kulturellen Kontext von Vincenzo Foppa und von flämischen Modellen, sehr beliebt im Sforza Hof. Von der Flämischen erfuhr Bergognone die Liebe zum Detail, in den Berührungen des Lichts, die die Materialien und in der raffinierten Bildtechnik zeigen, basierend auf dem Kontrast zwischen transluzenten Pigmenten, beispielsweise zwischen dem roten Lack der Tunika der beiden Engel und dem emaillierten Gemälde der Fleischtöne.
