Phillips verfolgte eine lange und erfolgreiche Karriere über fünfzig Jahre, auf der Straße als itinerant Künstler Malerei Porträts von Clustern von Freunden, Verwandten und Nachbarn in New York State und New England. Sein Handelsbestand war die schlichte Gleichheit, ohne Schatten oder Modellierung. Obwohl er von repetitiven Formeln abhängig war, um effizient zu arbeiten, als er die Landschaft bereiste, war er dennoch in der Lage, seine Sitten imaginativ zu individualisieren. In "Mrs. Mayer and Daughter" sind Phillips meisterhafte Design-Fähigkeiten in den sauber enthaltenen Formen der Mutter und des Kindes zu erkennen, angereichert durch die Verwendung von brillanter, gesättigter Farbe und sorgfältigem Detail.
