Unter dem roten, weißen und rosa Peony in voller Blüte kurbelt eine Katze auf und schläft. Pfingstrose und Katzen sind eine traditionelle Kombination in chinesischen Malereien und das Gemälde zeigt auch eine Spur von experimentellem Test und Fehler des Malers mit der Mokkotsu-Technik, die ohne Umriss malt, Pigmente über und über und verschwimmt sie in einigen Teilen. Die Katze ist nicht sehr geschickt reproduziert, aber ihr Ausdruck des Schlämmens ist bequem einzigartig und bezaubernd. Shiba Kokan (1747-1818) war Maler und niederländischer Gelehrter in der letzten Hälfte der Mitte-Edo-Periode.
