St. Jerome wird auf seinen Knien in der Wildnis in einer Haltung von Buße und Gebet dargestellt. Von etwa 374 n. Chr. verbrachte St Jerome mehrere Jahre unter den Einsiedlern in der syrischen Wüste östlich von Antiochia. Das Landschaftsbild des Künstlers ist eher dem von Europa als Syrien näher. Obwohl das Amt des Kardinals während des Lebens von St. Jerome nicht existierte, wird er aufgrund seiner engen Verbindung mit Papst St. Damasus I oft als Kardinal dargestellt.
