Religiöse Regeln verboten Frauen, in katholischen Kirchen zu spielen, einen Beitrag zum Aufstieg von Castrati, männliche Sopranen, die vor Beginn der Pubertät kastriert wurden. Unter den berühmtesten Castrati, Pasqualini wird in diesem Porträt von dem Gott Apollo gekrönt, der in einem musikalischen Wettbewerb mit den satyr Marsyas (im Hintergrund gezeigt, besiegt und gebunden an einen Baum mit seinen Bagpipes neben ihm). Pasqualini trat 1630 in den Chor der Sixtinischen Kapelle, und ab 1632 war ein Protagonist in vielen Opern im Palazzo Barberini produziert, für die Sacchi Sets entworfen.
