Ippolito dei Medici (1511-1535) war der natürliche Sohn von Giuliano, Herzog von Nemours. Während noch ein Baby, wurde er in die Pflege seines Onkels gegeben, Papst Leo X (Giovanni Medici). Der Cousin des Papstes, der es ihm gelang, Papst Clement VII zu werden, machte Ippolito 1529 zum Kardinal. Sein ungewöhnliches Attire ist ein Hinweis auf den Teil, den er in der Verteidigung Ungarns gegen die Türken gespielt hat, kurz bevor dieses Porträt geschaffen wurde.
