Nachdem er von 1880 bis 1888 in der Académie Julian intermittierend studiert und als Porträtist in Boston arbeitete, kehrte Klumpke 1898 nach Frankreich zurück, um ein Porträt von Rosa Bonheur (1822–1899) zu führen, dem Franzosen, den sie lange bewundert hatte. Bonheur trägt auf ihrer Jacke ihre Medaille des Ordens der Ehrenlegion. Die beiden Frauen wurden Gefährten in château de By, Bonheurs Haus bei Fontainebleau. Nach Bonheurs Tod erbte Klumpke ihre Residenz und Studio und widmete sich der Förderung von Bonheurs Vermächtnis.
