Vallayer-Coster trat 1770 als Maler des Stilllebens der Französischen Königlichen Akademie bei, das Genre konventionell als geeignet für Künstlerinnen aus dem achtzehnten Jahrhundert Europa und die niedrigste der Hierarchie der Akademie der Genres. Sie genossen günstige kritische Meinung während ihrer Karriere, sowie die Schirmherrschaft von Königin Marie Antoinette vor der Revolution und Kaiserin Josephine danach. Dieses Gemälde gehörte wahrscheinlich zu den vier Stillleben und zwei Porträts, die Vallayer-Coster auf dem Salon von 1781 ausstellte.
