Unter seinen Innovationen startete Annibale den Vogue für Landschaften, in denen die Natur sorgfältig untersucht, aber von der Phantasie in einen idyllischen Rahmen für religiöse oder mythologische Geschichten verwandelt wurde. Die großen Mandelaugen der Hauptfigur stammen aus dem Studium der alten Skulptur. Das Gemälde von Annibale zeigt Johannes die Ankunft Christi, auf den er verweist und den er am nächsten Tag taufen wird. Dieses schön erhaltene Öl auf Kupfer gehörte zu mehreren illustren Sammlungen, darunter die Familie Farnese in Parma und die Orléans Sammlung in Paris.
