Vasco da Gama wurde in Sines geboren, wahrscheinlich in 1468, und starb in Indien im Dezember 1524, nur drei Monate in seinen Begriff als Viceroy von portugiesischem Indien. Er war der zweite Sohn von Estêvão da Gama. Sein älterer Bruder war Paulo da Gama, der mit Vasco auf der Reise nach Indien von 1497-1499 reiste und fast am Ende der Rückreise auf der Insel Terceira auf den Azoren starb. Die Chronik dieser Zeit sagt uns, dass Vasco da Gama war
