Das Kind Jesus reagiert mit spielerischem Enthusiasmus auf eine liebende Heilige Katharina, eine Prinzessin, die durch Perlen und eine Märtyrerhand identifiziert wird. Sie wurde wegen der "mystischen Ehe" als Fürbitte für junge Frauen geschätzt, die sie an Christus gebunden hat. Die warme Menschheit und elegant rhythmische Komposition des Bildes spiegeln Van Dycks große Bewunderung für Titian, Veronese und andere Künstler in seinen Jahren in Italien (1621–27) wider.
