Solche Studienköpfe wurden von Van Dyck mit Live-Modellen bemalt, deren Merkmale dann in fertigen Bildern, meist religiösen Themen, wiederholt wurden. Zum Beispiel diente diese Skizze als Prototyp für eine Ähnlichkeit der Jungfrau Maria in einer Darstellung der Heiligen Familie. Die Ikonographie der melancholischen jungen Frau mit langen Haaren, die ihre Schultern hinunterfließt, passt auch zu Bildern von Mary Magdalen. Faszinierend sagt uns ein früher Biograph, dass Van Dyck einmal seine Schwester Susanna in dieser Guise dargestellt hat.
