Dieses beeindruckende Porträt, das etwa 1618 malte, als der Künstler achtzehn oder neunzehn Jahre alt war, ist sehr nah im Stil zu zeitgenössischen und etwas früheren Porträts von Rubens, für die Van Dyck damals arbeitete. In seinem Beharren auf Volumen und Texturen, der engen Aufmerksamkeit auf Kostümdetails und der passiven Pose und Ausdruck, hält das Gemälde auch eine ältere Netherlandische Tradition, wie in Porträts von Anthonis Mor (ca. 1516/19-ca. 1575/76).
