Die Le Nain-Brüder sind berühmt für ihre sensible Darstellung des ländlichen Lebens, die sie ohne den Reiter in vielen früheren Bildern gezeigt. Es ist oft schwierig zu unterscheiden, welche der drei Brüder ein bestimmtes Gemälde ausgeführt haben, und dieses Öl auf Kupfer wurde sowohl Antoine als auch Louis zugeschrieben. Ein neuer Geschmack für den Realismus Mitte der 1800er Jahre verfestigte den Platz der Brüder Le Nain in einem Kanon der französischen Malerei, der Gustave Courbet und Edouard Manet enthielt.
