Bekannt für Renderings wilder Bestien, die an der Eroberung ihrer Beute beteiligt sind, ist Barye als prägender Künstler unter den kleinen Bronzeplastikern aus dem 19. Jahrhundert, die als „Animaliers“ bezeichnet werden. Das emotionale und gewalttätige Subjekt und die dynamische Komposition sind typisch für die römische Epoche. Barye war bekannt, Pariser Zoos zu besuchen, um Tiere aus dem Leben zu ziehen. 1859 zog Barye nach Barbizon, einem Dorf am Rande des Waldes von Fontainebleau, wo er anderen Künstlern der Barbizon Schule, darunter Jean-François Millet und Théodore Rousseau, beitrat.
