Anton Mitov war Maler, Kunstkritiker und Publizist, Gründer der frühesten künstlerischen Gilde, der Gesellschaft für Kunstförderung in Bulgarien (1893), Gründer und Herausgeber der ersten Fachpublikation für Kunst in Bulgarien, “Iskustvo” (Kunst-)Magazin, Gründer und Professor an der National School of Drawing (National Academy of Art) und dessen Direktor von 1912 bis 1918, Anton Mitov war eine der Kultur nach der Kunst. Er studierte 1885 an der Kunstakademie Florenz. Er definierte sich als Künstler der „realen Schule“, die „dass alles aus der Natur gezogen werden sollte, nicht durch Phantasie“. Sein Werk war nicht auf die Malerei beschränkt. Er bemalte auch Ikonen, arbeitete an der Dekoration des St. Alexander Nevsky Memorial Temple, und entworfene Projekte für Briefmarken.
