Ein Künstler der erstaunlichen Originalität, Antonello kombinierte eine Netherlandish Mastery of Description mit einem italienischen Schwerpunkt auf formale Präsentation und Ausdruck. Dieses Gemälde kann bereits 1470 erscheinen. Um seine Funktion als Hilfe für die Meditation zu erhöhen, wird Christus hinter einem Parapeten gezeigt – eine Konvention, die Antonello aus der Portraitur aneignet. Das Gerät erhöht die Wirkung der physischen Gegenwart und des Leidens Christi: "Ein Mann der Trauer und Bekannte mit Trauer" (Jesaja 53:3).
