„Es scheint mir, dass das Recht des Künstlers, von der Natur abzuweichen, nicht bestritten werden kann. Es war nicht nur in unserer Zeit, sondern wahrscheinlich auch in allen Zeiten, die Tendenz der Künstler, ein Kunstwerk unabhängig vom Realismus zu produzieren, unabhängig davon, was man wirklich sieht. Um seine Phantasie, seine Phantasie, zu nutzen, ist sicherlich das Recht eines Künstlers, und, wenn man dies zugibt, darf man nicht vergessen, zum Beispiel, dass Bruegels Gemälde auch nicht die Natur sind, – sie sind wirklich Fantasie.“ (Arnold Schönberg, Round-Table on Modern Art, 1949)
