Das Thema des Gemäldes wird aus dem apokryphalischen Buch von Tobit gezogen, das sagt, wie der Erzengel Raphael Tobias dazu führte, die Blindheit seines Vaters mit der Galle der Fische zu heilen, die er gefangen hatte. Obwohl in Genua geboren, zog Bernardo Strozzi 1630 nach Venedig, wo diese Leinwand gemalt wurde. Er wiederholte die Zusammensetzung mindestens zweimal, was darauf hindeutete, dass es einige Erfolge genossen. Die Arbeit von Strozzi zeichnet sich durch eine ausgeprägte, pulsierende Pinselarbeit und eine Aufmerksamkeit auf Stilllebensdetails aus.
