Zu jener zeit , die oper befand sich noch in der rue le peletier und war noch nicht in das von garnier entworfene gebäude umgezogen, das sie bald ersetzen sollte . Von dem 1870s bis zu seinem tod , Degas's lieblingsfächer waren ballerinas bei der arbeit , in der probe oder in ruhe , und er erkundete das thema unermüdlich mit vielen variationen in haltung und geste .
