Die Signatur sagt, dass die Szene von Ärentuna, nördlich von Uppsala, wo Liljefors in einem Ferienhaus im Winter 1883–84 blieb. In den nassen Feldern gab es viele schwarze Grouse, und der Goshawk – damals üblich – hatte viel Beute. Liljefors erschossen eine junge Falke und benutzte sie als Modell, zusammen mit Grouse. Er hat sie im Wald montiert und alles im Freien gemalt. Grau-weiße Farbe dünn aufgetragen mit einer halbtrockenen Pinsel vervollständigt den Eindruck von kaltem Winter und verwirbeltem Schnee wie die Falke schlägt.
