Diese Kirche wurde 1369 gegründet, 1546 verlassen und später als Motiv deutscher Romantiker umarmt. Carus besuchte im August 1820 eine Zeichnung (Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden), die als Studie für das Gemälde diente. Es zeigt einen Vista durch zwei Fenster – eine auf beiden Seiten des ruinierten Chors – nach einem hellen Morgenhimmel und einem entfernten Hügel. In seiner Stärke und Opposition von Dunkel und Licht und mit jungen Bäumen, die sich auf den Kreislauf des Lebens beziehen, lädt das Bild sowohl Hoffnung als auch Meditation ein.
