In einem dunklen Dachboden hat der alte Alchemist eine Destillationsapparatur eingerichtet. Auf dem gezeigten, teilweise nach links geschnittenen Ofen befindet sich ein großer Kupferkessel, der gegebenenfalls mit einer Flüssigkeit gefüllt ist. Ein Rohr verbindet die Oberseite des Kessels mit der Glaskugel, die der Alchemist auf einem Stuhl platziert hat. Das Rohr ist lang genug, um den Dampf zu kühlen und zu kondensieren. Er wartet neugierig darauf, dass das Destillationsprodukt in die Glaskugel fällt. Der große Kupferkessel sieht aus wie die Art der Stille, die in der Alkoholherstellung verwendet wird.
