Frühe Besucher von Yosemite sahen das Tal in religiösen und historischen Begriffen und mochten die urtümlichen geologischen Merkmale zu den großen Ruinen der westlichen Zivilisation. Standorte wie die ägyptischen Pyramiden und das römische Kolosseum waren durch Stereographen europäischer Fotografen bekannt geworden. Auf dieser Fotografie von Cathedral Rock, benannt nach seiner Ähnlichkeit mit der gotischen Architektur, betonte Watkins die monumentale Qualität der aufragenden Granitspiren, die fast vollständig den Rahmen füllen.
