Carolus-Duran war auf dem Höhepunkt seines Erfolgs als Gesellschaftsporträtist, als er diese Ähnlichkeit der Frau des amerikanischen Bankiers in Paris im Jahre 1890 malte. Die Pose und das Kostüm, mit ihren starken Vorschlägen des siebzehnten Jahrhunderts, reflektieren die frühe und anhaltende Bewunderung des Künstlers für Velázquez.
