Beauxs zweijährige Nichte und Lieblingsmodell, Ernesta Drinker (1892–1981), schaltet die Hand ihrer Krankenschwester Mattie, deren Figur mutig an der Taille gezüchtet wird. Die radikale Komposition und die freie Pinselarbeit spiegeln Beauxs Wertschätzung der Gemälde von Édouard Manet und Edgar Degas wider. Ernesta ist ein spiritueller Nachkomme von Diego Velázquez königlichen Kindern, gleichzeitig würdig und verletzlich. Matties Hand dient als universelles Symbol für Schutz und Sicherheit, und die große Weite ihrer Schürze setzt die Skala für die diminutive Figur des Kindes.
