Nach dem Weltkrieg Ich beendete 1919, Soutine blieb in Céret, einer kleinen Stadt in den Pyrenäen, für etwa drei Jahre. Diese Stadt befindet sich in Südwestfrankreich, 30km Binnenland von der Mittelmeerküste und innerhalb von 10 km von der französisch-spanischen Grenze. Es ist auch bekannt als ein Ort, wo, während des Gipfels des Kubismus, Picasso und Braque oft kamen, um ihre Werke zu schaffen. Soutine erhielt Unterstützung von einem Kunsthändler Zborowski, der auch Modigliani uneingeschränkt unterstützte. Hier in Céret schuf Soutine viele seiner Meisterwerke. Obwohl Soutine zu dieser Zeit noch in seinen späten Zwanziger Jahren war, entwickelte sich sein Gemäldestil während seiner Aufenthalte in Céret schnell.
